Higley strongly believes that the primary goal of an orthodontist is to improve a patient’s oral health, not just to straighten the patient’s teeth to improve their looks. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to maintain and clean, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and eventually tooth loss.

Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping, breaking and other forms of dental injury. When children have protruding teeth and hit something, the teeth are broken 82% of the time. When the teeth are positioned correctly in the mouth, they are only broken 9% of the time.
